Outreach Experience

I have extensive experience in science outreach and communication. I have run hands-on exhibits at large events, such as “Celebrate Science Indiana!” at the state fairgrounds and “Meet a Scientist” at the Indiana State Museum, to visiting individual classrooms. I have created two booklets for outreach events, one about coral reefs for the University of Delaware's Coast Day during my masters degree, and the other on leaf anatomy during my PhD for multiple events (PDF links below). I often use Twitter and Instagram for science outreach and science communication. Over the holidays I ran #HolidayBotany threads on both.  Due to my outreach efforts on Twitter, I currently run accounts for PlantingScience and Central Indiana Science Outreach and I was social media manager for the 2017 American Society of Plant Biologist (ASPB) meeting (Honolulu, HI), where the hashtag #PlantBio17 reached almost 3 million people. In the future I would continue to leverage the science communication and social media skills I have honed to increase student engagement by continuing to build connections beyond the classroom and laboratory through online interactions.
